Hour To Midnight
Find out why what made Hour To Midnight the best escape room experience I’ve had in Portland. {Sponsored post}
Do these things sound like fun to you: a mysterious room, hidden clues, tricky puzzles and a ticking clock. If, like me, that sounds like a blast, then escape rooms are for you! That’s why I was thrilled when Hour To Midnight invited me and 5 of my friends to check out their new game, “The Secret of Nibiru”.
First of all, let me explain what an escape room game is. You and your team are “locked” inside a room and the goal is to escape the room within the given time period (often one hour) by following clues and solving puzzles inside the room. A big part of the fun is figuring out what the hell you are supposed to do, so I’m not going to say too much about the actual game we played, but it involved things like cracking codes, deciphering messages and solving physical puzzles that eventually lead us to a key, that opened the door.
My crack team of puzzle solvers and I arrived at Hour To Midnight a few minutes before our game was scheduled to begin. The ladies locked out purses up in a little locker they provided. (Nice touch!) They gave us some ground rules and went over how the game works, what to do if we needed a hint, or if someone needed to leave the room before the game was over. Then they walked us down the hall, we entered a dark room, they shut the door and the game began.
I’m going to leave details of the game a mystery (because that’s the fun part!) but I will say that the room was amazing. As you can see from the promotional photos they gave me, it is designed to look like an old fashioned study or office. Think Indiana Jones. It was truly remarkable what they did. I literally gasped and clapped at a few of the hidden surprises. Come to find out, the owners are haunted house veterans, who spent years working on some of the most popular haunted houses in Portland and wanted to find a way to use those skills year round.
Four of the five of us had done other escape rooms, but we all agreed this was the best one any of us had tried. I highly, highly recommend it. After the game was over, they gave us a little peak into the next room that they are working on called “Assassin’s Deadly Game” and we are all pumped to try it when it opens. Beyond the exceptional setting, we all really liked that there was no staff in the room with you. They watched on cameras and talked to you over speakers, but in no way interfered or interacted with your game play.
If you like puzzles and need something fun and original to do on your next birthday or even just on a Saturday night, check out Hour To Midnight (or any other escape room) in town. It’s a lot of fun and a great experience with friends. Happy escaping!
{Disclosure: Hour To Midnight provided me and 5 friends with a free game in their escape room, but no other compensation was provided. All opinions in this post are my own.}
