Sunday Parkways

Okay, so a few weeks back, Jacob and I got too drunk to drive ourselves home after a wedding down at the Riverplace Hotel.  So we left the car there and  got a ride with a friend (thanks Abby!).  The next morning on our way to pick up the car, we rode through one of the Sunday Parkways… and we were pretty impressed.

Sunday Parkways happen about once a month in the summer, one in each quadrant of the city.  Roads in a loop (4-6 miles long) shut down to make way for cyclists, walkers, runners, kids, and just general fun in the streets.   We saw lots of sidewalk chalk, games, and people sitting in their front yard watching the world go by.

There is only one more left this summer, and I’m planning on attending.  It’s on September 26th in Northwest Portland mostly through Chinatown and the Pearl District.  Even if you don’t live there, it’s a great time to get out on your bike and and see the city and your neighbors in a way that’s impossible when there are cars around.
