Sharing Sunday: Local Food Challenge + Giveaway
Why I’m taking the Oregon Food Bank’s Local Food Challenge this August plus a $50 Whole Foods Gift Card giveaway!
Happy Sunday!
Today I want to talk about an issue that’s been challenging for me: food budgets. In an ideal world my family and I would be eating all organic, local fruits, vegetables, grass-fed meats. But we don’t, because eating like that is expensive, and right now, we are on a budget. Cutting down on our monthly grocery bill is one of the strategies that enables me to stay home with our baby. My goal is to spend $100/week on groceries and still eat healthy. I am mostly successful, but not all the time.
I’ve given up shopping at Fred Meyer (I love shopping there!) for Winco. And guess what? It is cheaper! Combined with smart meal planning, I’m saving my family a couple hundred dollar a month. About $50/week. (I’ll be writing more about that later this month) It’s great for our bank account, but in exchange, we’ve sacrificed eating local and organic produce. I’m not happy about it, but up until now I’ve figured it’s just part of the sacrifice.
With all those concerns looming in my brain, I was really intrigued when I was asked to participate in the Oregon Food Bank’s “Local Food Challenge” this August. They are challenging participants to spend a percentage of their grocery budget on local foods. I’m challenging myself to just 10%, which is about $10/week, $40 for the entire month. It may not sound like a lot but I’m picking a goal that I think we can sustain for the rest of the year, not just in August. I’ll be sharing my journey here on the blog, for the next 5 weeks.
But what I really want is for you to join me and take the Oregon Food Bank’s Local Food Challenge as well! August is the easiest month of the year to find delicious local foods. I know you can do it. Just sign up here. It’s really easy and only takes a minute to complete the process. As an added incentive, I’m partnering with Whole Foods to giveaway a $50 gift card to help you through the challenge. Throughout the month of August Whole Foods is spotlighting local producers in all their stores making it easy to find food to meet the challenge.
To enter the giveaway for the $50 Whole Foods Gift Card, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. Contest ends at midnight on August 9th. The winner, selected randomly, will be asked to provide a mailing address to receive the gift card. Good luck and thanks for joining me this August for the Local Food Challenge.
there are several farmer’s markets near me, two I can walk to – and do!!! Also, at whole foods!!
I really love utilizing the farmer’s markets around town to get the freshest produce. I trust the growers, get everything that is in season and the prices are comparable, if not cheaper, than many supermarkets.
Farmer’s market is my favorite place.
My favorite place to get local foods is of course the farmer’s market! The quality and price can’t be beat!
Have fun with this challenge, Kristi! : )
You might be interested in checking out Refuge Gardens for next summer. It’s a Mercy Corps project, giving local refugees a chance to grow and sell veggies here in Portland. We signed up for their produce box this year. It’s not cheap ($500) but every single week we’ve been getting lots of fresh goodies… I think it’s supposed to average $20 of produce per week. There’s also a weekly newsletter with info on the farmers, the vegetables, and recipe suggestions.
I like to visit local Farmer’s Markets.
Fruit stands and farmers markets
We go to our local farmer’s market on Saturdays when it is open.
There are two farms that we love to go to and it’s just a short drive. Thistledown and Lonepine. My kids love going there!
