Blueplate

Have you ever had an egg cream soda?  It’s always sounded totally gross to me.  I just picture a raw egg, dissolved in some milk and mixed up in a milk shake machine.  So gross.  But of course, that’s not what an egg cream soda is.  One of my favorite bloggers and podcasters, Molly Wizenberg, AKA Orangette, set me straight last summer on the Sparking Beverages episode of her Spilled Milk podcast.

Turns out an egg cream is just milk, chocolate syrup and club soda.  So that’s what I ordered when I found myself at a soda fountain in downtown Portland.  The restaurant is called Blueplate, it’s an old-fashioned lunch counter and much like the Pioneer Courthouse, it’s open only on weekdays.  They have a big soda fountain menu, with milkshakes, sundaes and floats, but a small food menu.  Sloppy Joes, roast chicken, and roast beef are on the menu everyday. Pot roast, beef stroganoff, and meatloaf are the specials.  I had a roast beef sandwich that came with mashed potatoes.

It was delicious!  It was raining when I walked in and the hot food really hit the spot. I’d love to go back, but I’m not sure when that will happen since they are only open during work hours.  Maybe sometime on a long lunch break.
